An incredibly cool score from Stephen Sondheim – penned for a weird TV-only production that starred Anthony Perkins as an offbeat poet! The music is often a lot more instrumental than other Sondheim outings – although there are some very cool vocal tracks that feature Perkins speak/singing in a really compelling way – and the arrangements are conducted by Norman Paris, with a strong degree of jazz – playful one minute, rich in feeling the next, very similar to the way that jazz was used in some of the better-known 60s dramatic TV shows. There's lots of flute on the recording – snaking out in ways that follow the sneakiness of the show's story – and when the vocal tunes do come into play, it's with an approach that's a lot more subtle than any of Sondheim's famous shows. Titles include "Looking For Ella", "If You Can Find Me I'm Here", "Meeting The Others", "You're One Of Us/Charles & Ella", "The Dark Men Come/Take Me To The World", and "The First Dance".
