Billie/Popi
CD (Item 597978) MGM/Intrada, 1965/1969 — Condition: New Copy
An Intrada double-header – with two overlooked film scores in a single package! First up is Billie – a playful little soundtrack for an offbeat Patty Duke film – handled by Dominic Frontiere in ways that are sometimes sentimental and respectful, and sometimes seem to be poking a bit of fun at the subject matter! Frontiere's usually our favorite when he hits an upbeat groove – and there's some nice 60s mod moments here that definitely make the soundtrack work seeing out – kind of jaunty numbers that are real standouts. But some of the mellower moments aren't bad either – and have a nice sort of balance next to the other cuts. Patty Duke sings "Funny Little Butterflies" and "Lonely Little In Between" – and other titles include "Discotheque", "Hold It", "The Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl", and "The Beat". Popi is one of the grooviest soundtracks ever written by Dominic Frontiere – for this strange little comedy starring Alan Arkin as a father who's trying to give his kids away! The tracks have a sweeping groovy approach – large orchestrations, sunny, bouncy, with some strings mixed in with tighter small combo grooving. A few of the tracks have more exotic themes, kind of echoing the uptown world of the film – but overall the score's a nice batch of late 60s groovers with some sweet mod elements! Titles include "They Ran Away", "Rita's Theme", "Two Boys On A Beach", "You Want These Kids", "Geneviva Take Care", and "Where's My Kids".
