CD (Item 381504) Dakar Sound (Netherlands), Early 70s — Condition: New Copy

Some of the earliest recordings by Senegal's mighty Orchestra Baobab! The group formed in 1970 to become the house band at a new Dakar club of the same name, playing in the Afro-Cuban style that was all the rage throughout much of West Africa. But this stellar group had some different things in mind! Most of the tracks here were written by the griot Laye M'Boup – the tragic victim of a fatal car crash in 1974 – who boldly sought to Africanize the music, singing in the native Wolof language and making no attempt to sound like a salsero. Additionally, guitarist Barthelemey Attiso consistently goes against type with solos that blow us away – his lyric, rhythmically complex, wah-wah drenched solos blurred the line between dub and psychedelia and clearly paved the way for the hard-hitting mbalax style that was to come. Truly essential stuff! Tracks include "Adia Baoury", "N'Diaye", "Yaraf", "Lamine Gueye", and "Aduna Jarul Naawo" which was later recut as "Dee Moo Woor" for the group's comeback album Specialist In All Styles.  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
