A beautiful little record by Pharoah Sanders – quite different than most of his other recordings of the 70s, and done in a smoothly jazzy mode that also features plenty of soul! Sanders did the set in collaboration with Norman Connors – and the style is in that same great mix of mellow soul and deeper jazz that Connors used on his own brilliant records from the time. Instrumentation includes some keyboards and guitar mixed in with Sanders' always-soulful work on sax – and a number of cuts have vocals, either by a chorus shading in the tunes, or by Phyllis Hyman in the lead. The whole thing's great – warmly soulful, and almost a tighter extension of the modes that Sanders was exploring on his last album or two for Impulse. Titles include "As You Are", "Everything I Have Is Good", "Got To Give It Up", "Love Will Find a Way", "Love Is Here", and "Pharomba". (Cover has a cut corner.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Heavy Weather
CBS, 1977. Very Good+
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1968. Very Good
One of Johnny's best 60s albums for Verve – a hard-wailing small group session with a very soulful feel! The group's a quintet with some very strong players – including a young Jimmy Ponder on organ, plus Billy Gardner on organ, Freddie Waits on drums, and Ron Carter on bass. Johnny ... A great overview of 4 key modern guitar players of the 50s – Jimmy Raney, Dick Garcia, Joe Puma, and Chuck Wayne – all presented here in tracks that may well be exclusive to this release. (We know that Raney recorded an album or two for ABC, but haven't seen any from Wayne, Puma, or ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1975. Very Good
An excellent LP by one of the most underrecognized talents of 70's soul! DJ's deep soul voice is smooth and mellow, with the kind of honest heartbreaking quality that you find in the best work by Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. This great LP's got DJ in a nice set of arrangements that have a ... LP, Vinyl record album

TSOP, 1980. Very Good+
A huge change from the early sound of The Stylistics – as the group have moved to Philly International, and are really shining in the light of the Gamble & Huff galaxy! The album's got a lot more grooves than before, but still offers up plenty of space for the trademark mellow ballads ... LP, Vinyl record album
