CD (Item 598070) V Disc/Collectors Choice, Late 30s/Early 40s — Condition: New Copy

Early recordings from Lena Horne – originally recorded for the V-Disc series by the US Army – and also some of the better studio material cut by Horne at the time! Lena's vocals are wonderful, even at this early stage of her career – and the recordings really focus on her singing, and often have the backing ensemble mixed somewhat lower – so that you can really hear Horne's blue-tinged presentation of the lyrics, in a manner that almost replicates the way these sides must have sounded coming out of a set of speakers on an Army base in WWII. There's a definite note of melancholy here that must have made more than a few GI's wish for home – and titles include "Deed I Do", "Come To Baby Do", "Mad About The Boy", "Uptown Blues", "Dad Ol Debbil Consequence", "Where Is Love", and "Moanin Low".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
