A mad funky suite from the Beat Konducta – Vol 5 in the evolving, unpredictable series of deep, crackling beatcraft – this one a tribute to Dilla! Dil Cosby Suite is as solid as any of the volumes to date, compellingly funky and in more of Madlib's heady hip hop mode than some of the more psychedelic and experimental efforts before it. That's not to say that Madlib's given up on the oddball flourishes – it's a wild ride, but the emotionally resonant soul samples, some with vocals, but mostly instrumentals, and thumping beats loom large in the mix – and it's as pleasing to our ears as anything Madlib has spun in the past couple years. 22 short bursts of mad genius, with spacey jazz funk, cosmic keys, and swirling samples galore!
