A great addition to the Modern Jazz Quartet – as the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre brings a sharp modern edge to the record! The album's similar to the other MJQ Music Inn date with Sonny Rollins – and shows how the addition of a reed player can really unlock new colors, tones, and possibilities in the sounds of the group. And in this case, given the Giuffre's at the height of his early powers – coming off some sublime trio dates for Atlantic – the pairing of players is completely sublime! Titles include "A Fugue At Music Inn", "Serenade", and "Fun".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bass & I
Blue Note (Japan), 1997. New Copy
A beautiful illustration of the strength of Ron Carter as a leader – that way he has of firmly directing a combo from the place of the bass, yet always in a subtle way that never overpowers the rest of the group! The balance here is wonderful – as Ron's tones really come through ... CD
Philly Joe's Beat
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. New Copy
A stunner! Philly Joe's Beat is a beautiful bit of modernist hardbop by the drummer. Philly Joe pounds away with his usual clarity and groove, but the real treat is an unexpected appearance by the great Bill Barron, who plays tenor on the session. Barron's tenor is amazingly precise, and filled ... CD

Dark genius from Duke Pearson – quite possibly one of his hippest records ever, and an album that's filled with surprising twists and turns! At one level, the set seems to be a simple batch of soul jazz tunes – in the mode of Pearson's mid-60s classics on Blue Note – but at ... CD

A wonderful live set from Gary Burton – originally issued only in Japan, but a wonderful record that stands strongly with Gary's classic early 70s work for Atlantic and ECM Records! The group's a quartet – and has Gary's vibes alongside warm guitar lines from Sam Brown – a player ... CD

A really rare album from trumpeter Ted Curson – a unique 70s session recorded for Atlantic Records, but only ever issued overseas at the time! The date has Ted's trumpet coming into play with some of the electric touches of the 70s – not a full-on fusion record, but a really great ... CD
Modern Jazz Quartet & Orchestra
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. New Copy
An expanded setting for the Modern Jazz Quartet – and a very compelling little record that has the core combo augmented by larger orchestrations from Gunther Schuller – who has a very sympathetic ear for their sound! Schuller's charts are never overwhelming – and instead shade ... CD
Bagpipe Blues
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. New Copy
An amazing record, from an amazing player – the mighty Rufus Harley, heard here on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – as well as bagpipes, his "trademark" instrument! Don't be put off by the bagpipes, though, because Harley plays in a righteous soul jazz groove, and uses the ... CD

An album that may be worth it for just one track alone – although the whole thing is pretty darn great all the way through! We love the work that Slide Hampton cut overseas in the 70s – and this album's no exception, as it features this majestic 16 minute reading of Hampton's "To ... CD
