A trio of wonderful tributes to Erik Satie – all packaged together, and representing some of the most creative energy of the Nato Records label! First up is Sept Tableaux Phoniques Erik Satie – a beautiful little tribute to the genius of Satie – put together by the Nato Records label, and featuring sounds from some of its most creative musicians! The numbers here are more tributes to Satie's sense of sound and silence than versions of his compositions – really wonderful little tunes that sparkle with a sensitivity that really holds us rapt – sometimes straighter jazz, sometimes quite spare sounds that have a well-chosen sense of historicity in their construction. Titles include "Budapest Subway" from Steve Beresford, "Faction De Satie" by Lol Coxhill, "Allair Mets" by Tony Coe, "For Memories Of An Amnesia" by Philip Wachsmann, "Moving Things From A to B" by Dave Holland, and "Trois Bonbons De York Pour Eric Satie" by Alan Hacker. Trois Sarabandes Et Six Gnossiennes is more traditionally styled Erik Satie – solo piano readings of his compositions, played by Ulrich Gumpert in a wonderfully open way – quite creative in terms of timing, and recorded with this great sense of space in the room in which the music was performed – so that the notes echo back and forth, creating a sense of time folded in on itself that really illuminates the compositions. Titles include three "Sarabande" and six "Gonossienne" compositions by Satie. Last up is Correspondances Erik Satie Claude Debussy – a solo piano performance by Tony Hymas that showcases work by Satie and Debussy – not only a great reminder of what a wonderful pianist Hymas is on his own (something we lose in some of his larger concept recordings), but put together in a way that traces similarities between the two composers.
