A hard and heavy side from Buddy, and true to his reputation and the title of the LP, he comes out swinging! The set features a top notch mid 60s group, and from the sound of the numbers on this set, ol' Buddy did need to hand out any of his famous lectures on the bus afterwards, with some crisp soloing and great ensemble playing. 8 tracks in all, including "Basically Blues", "The Critics Choice", "My Man's Gone Now", "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" and "Sister Sadie". (Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Different Drummer
RCA, 1971. Very Good+
A 70s gem from Buddy Rich – a session that's cut with some really tightly arranged backings, but done in a way that actually has Buddy kicking the kit even more than usual! Some of the best tunes on the set have a really wicked sense of funk – one that uses a bit more space than in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, 1957. Very Good-
Gerry, after years of working in piano-less groups, actually plays a bit of the ivories on this one – a classic quartet set recorded in Boston, at Storyville – with a group that includes Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. There's a tight ... LP, Vinyl record album

Somethin' Special
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Very Good
Two of LA's leading soul jazz luminaries – playing head to head in an interesting session that mixes lines on piano and organ! McCann gives the set a good rollicking rhythm, and Holmes' increasing skill on the Hammond makes the set blow out over the top – and the pair get backing by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Genius Of Gerry Mulligan
Pacific Jazz, 1950s/1960. Very Good+
A great collection of (until then) previously-unreleased material – pulled from the Pacific Jazz vaults from a range of 50s sessions, and spanning some of Gerry's initial sides for the company, up to work that approached the late 50s date of this album's release. Material features Gerry in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pacific Jazz, Early 50s. Good
A full LP that collects together earlier recordings by Mulligan – done in the years 1952 and 1953, with a quartet that features Chet Baker, and bass by either Carson Smith or Bob Whitlock, and drums by either Larry Bunker or Chico Hamilton. Both Mulligan and Baker recorded together a number ... LP, Vinyl record album

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
