LP (Item 631832) Omnivore/Widows Taste, 1981 — Condition: New Copy

A very cool late live set from Art Pepper – working in a killer quartet setting! Neon Art Vol 1 features two side-long pieces, recorded in January of '81, at Parnell's in Seattle – both of which are released for the first time ever on this 2012 vinyl from Widow's Taste and Omnivore. Side one features a really great, elongated take on Pepper's "Red Car" – which was a stand out number on The Trip LP a few years earlier. This particular trip is stretched out to nearly 17 minutes long – with bassist David Williams and drummer Carl Burnett laying down a rhythm that's actually got a bit of funk in it – but pianist Milcho Leviev nearly steals the show! Pepper waits in the wings early on, but steps out brilliantly on alto as the performance builds up steam – and you can hear the audience really getting into it. Incredible! The other side features an 18 minute take on Pepper's "Blues For Blanche" – and Art commands this one from the start – by improvising pretty nicely on his sax, without straying too far out – and the players get some spotlight action, too. (A really nicely done release on Omnivore – on red colored vinyl, with some circle punches in the sleeve to show it off – plus a download card.)  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
