Oliver Nelson never gets his due, and we can never understand why, because his talents as both an arranger and soloist are extremely strong. This nice 2 LP set brings together 2 albums that are bound to make a convert out of anyone who's been passing him up so far, and it shows a young Nelson in a small group with players like Richard Williams, Richard Wyands, Roy Haynes, and Eric Dolphy. You might be tempted to get the set for the Dolphy playing (which is great), but you'll be stunned when you realize how many times you'll be thinking you hear Dolphy going out, and then find out that it's actually Nelson. Great stuff, and with the cuts "Mama Lou", "Altoitis", "Three Seconds", "The Drive", and "111-44". Originally released as the albums Straight Ahead and Screamin' The Blues.
