Oliver Nelson never gets his due, and we can never understand why, because his talents as both an arranger and soloist are extremely strong. This nice 2 LP set brings together 2 albums that are bound to make a convert out of anyone who's been passing him up so far, and it shows a young Nelson in a small group with players like Richard Williams, Richard Wyands, Roy Haynes, and Eric Dolphy. You might be tempted to get the set for the Dolphy playing (which is great), but you'll be stunned when you realize how many times you'll be thinking you hear Dolphy going out, and then find out that it's actually Nelson. Great stuff, and with the cuts "Mama Lou", "Altoitis", "Three Seconds", "The Drive", and "111-44". Originally released as the albums Straight Ahead and Screamin' The Blues. (Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige, 1961. Very Good
This is volume 3 of Prestige's set of European recordings by Dolphy, some of the last he would make before he passed away at a very young age. The group features Swedish piano giant Bent Axen, plus a rhythm section that includes Erik Moseholm on bass and Jorn Elniff on drums. Like most Dolphy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Inside Straight
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coldwater Flat
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A brilliant pairing of the Three Sounds trio with the larger arrangements of reedman Oliver Nelson – easily one of the most soulful bandleaders of the 60s, and a talent who really helps open up the trio's groove! The piano of Gene Harris is nice and sharp – played with a soulful sock ... LP, Vinyl record album
