Fantastic work from John Klemmer – hard-edged, exploratory, with a mix of spiritualism and soulfulness, and a few touches of easy soloing. Todd Cochran (Bayete) plays Fender Rhodes, Woody Theus is on drums, and Klemmer's got an echoplex hooked up to his tenor on a few cuts. The tracks were recorded in a number of different settings, with different personnel – but the whole thing's got a unified feel, and shows the depth of Klemmer's approach to a variety of styles. Titles include the Miles-esque jammer "Last Summer's Spell", plus "Rapture Of The Deep", "Sea Of Passion", "Prayer For John Coltrane", and "Love Song To Katherine". John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Good Gatefold
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Impulse, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Duke Ellington's drummer from the 50's leads a thunderous octet that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Sam Most on alto, and Jim Cook on tenor. Bellson's drums are out front, and he kicks the group nice and hard through tracks like "Thunderbird", "Nails", "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spirit of 1976
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Excellent groovy jazz from the great Emil Richards! The legendary LA vibist is caught live at Donte's – and is playing with Dave Makay on piano and percussion, as well as a bunch of other LA hipsters. The general groove is more jazz oriented than Emil's other records, but still very nice. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Life On Mars
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good
A fantastic bit of space age funk – and maybe one of the greatest moments ever from Philly Soul maestro Dexter Wansel! The album goes way beyond any of Wansel's other work – and blends his warm soulful styles with some of the more keyboard-oriented funk that was coming out of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
