LP, Vinyl record album

4.60 11

Classic album of NY club grooves, including their big hit "Body Music", mixed here by Francois Kevorkian and Larry Levan. Unlike a lot of groups on Prelude, these guys didn't seem to cut a whole lot of singles or LPs, but like a lot of the Prelude stable, this album's filled with catchy club cuts. Overall, the sound's reminiscent of the the early 80s in the best possible way, tight club grooves filled out nicely with some jazzy touches but in a really accessible way. Also includes "Inch By Inch", "Strike It Up", "Hold Onto The Feeling","Bring Out The Devil" and "Give It What You Got".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Music
Prelude, 1983. Very Good+
Classic work from James "D Train" Williams – a return to strong male lead vocals in club-oriented soul music, backed by some great grooves that helped Williams break out of the club ghetto of some of his contemporaries on the Prelude label. Williams' key partner in the project is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prelude, 1984. Very Good+
One of the indie soul killers of the early 80s – one of the few early albums cut for Prelude by James "D Train" Williams, one of the best male vocalists of his time! All the tracks were produced and arranged by keyboardist Hubert Eaves – and that aspect is one of the main ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of D Train
Prelude, 1986. Very Good-
Nice compilation of tracks by James "D Train" Williams – one of the most soulful artists to arise from the early 80s New York club scene of labels. The tracks are all produced by Hubert Eaves, and they feature a lot of nice keyboard work – presumably from Eaves as well. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prelude, 1979. Very Good+ 2 X 12"
Rare DJ-only double 12 inch version of a really nice disco side on Prelude! The record has Moses Dillard and Jesse Boyce handling production and arrangements, and the overall groove is pretty darn tight and soulful. Highlights include the jaunty moogy club track "Boogie With Me", the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keep On Jumpin'
Prelude, 1978. Very Good
A super-huge hit for Musique – quite a soulful group of singers, despite the strange and cheesy cover of the album – which makes them look like a bunch of roller disco porn stars caught in the studio! The group actually features great vocals by a young Jocelyn Brown, and the record's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sharon Redd
Prelude, 1980. Very Good
A fantastic album of funky club soul tracks from Sharon Redd – with a sound that's a lot rawer and more honest than some of her later work, and nice hard grooving from a tight backup band with stellar lead guitar by Rodney Brown. Rodney really shines on the track "Can You Handle It" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Secret Weapon
Prelude, 1983. Very Good+
Not the biggest name in 80s club, but a very groovy group that cut some massive singles for the Prelude label – featured here in their rare full length LP! Secret Weapon have a great way with a groove – tight, but never commercial – bumping along with a bit of jazz in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1977. Very Good+
We have to admit we've passed this album up for years and years, as it seems to be rather ubiquitous in these parts, and boy were we mistaken! Side one is mostly instrumental, and sounds like a lost Dexter Wansel album, with sophisticated, spacey post-fusion arrangements and a quasi-futuristic ... LP, Vinyl record album

ABC, 1978. Near Mint-
The third in a really great run from Rhythm Heritage – a group who continued to hold up a strong level of instrumental quality, despite the fact that they'd topped the charts, and were smack right in the middle of the LA studio scene at the time! Part of the credit goes to producer/arranger ... LP, Vinyl record album

Smash, 1964. Very Good-
One of the odder James Brown records from the 60s – as it includes 11 studio tracks with overdubbed audience. James was under contract with King at the same time, and couldn't record new vocal material for Smash – so the record doesn't contain any JB originals, but covers of Louis ... LP, Vinyl record album

A bomb! The title of this one says it all – a burning anthem of pride and power, issued in 1969, at the end of one of the most troubling decades in America. James answers all the Uncle Tom cries from his critics – and comes up with "Say It Loud", an instant chant that was ... LP, Vinyl record album
