Melvin Van Peebles amazing first full-length film – a surprisingly sensitive story of race and nation in late 60s France! The film's based on Van Peebles' French novel La Permission – and tells the story of a black American soldier's three day affair with a French woman – with some pretty great scene-setting elements along the way, including a fair bit of elements that show a surprising New Wave influence on Van Peebles. There's almost more of a European feel to the whole thing – and the movie's quite different than Sweet Sweetback – but in a great one, one that really shows that Van Peebles was already a well-grounded conventional director before taking on some different themes back in the US.
