The lesser-known first album from Hall & Oates – recorded for Atlantic in the early 70s, right before their mega-hit run for RCA! The feel here is looser and more homegrown than later on – a bit more rock than soul, thanks to arrangements by Whole Oats that almost have some of the phrasings you'd hear on the first album or two by Steely Dan. The songs themselves are a bit more personal, almost with a Todd Rundgren sort of fragileness – and although Arif Mardin handled the larger string and horn arrangements, the overall sound is less soulful and sweet, and more in a singer-songwriter sort of mode. Titles include "Waterwheel", "Fall In Philadelpha", "All Our Love", "Lazyman", "Goodnight & Goodmorning", "Southeast City Window", and "They Needed Each Other". (Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Strange compilation focusing on a bunch of San Francisco rock and funk groups produced by Abe "Voco" Kesh. This is noteworthy for a bunch of early Sylvester stuff (and it's good, too), plus some funky stuff by Clifford Coulter. Also includes work by John Lee Hooker and Linda Tillery. ...
