Sandy Bull & The Rhythm Ace – Live, 1976

4.90 26

One of coolest live documents of folk music adventuror Sandy Bull you could ask for – recorded at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1976 – with Bull playing the oud, on stage with early version of the TASCAM 4-track recorder, utilized here as his backing "band"! He dubs his tape machine The Rhythm Ace – with Bull playing the oud to pre-taped drum machine and bass, and talking to the audience about just what heck they're seeing and hearing. We don't know of the audience was in awe, dumbstruck or what – folk fellows didn't do this kind of thing on stage in '76 – which makes it all the more rewarding to hear 35+ years later! Sandy's musicianship is brilliant, and it's great fun to listen to him talk about his pal The Rhythm Ace, too. Includes "Oud", "Love Is Forever", "Driftin", "Alligator Wrestler" (with an intro) and "New York City" – plus a demo of his Rhythm Ace.  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Takoma/4 Men With Beards, 1965. New Copy (reissue)
A perfect illustration of the genius of guitarist Robbie Basho – a set recorded early in his career, but with music that's light years ahead of most of his contemporaries! Although a set of solo acoustic guitar tracks, the music isn't really folk – nor is it the sort of acoustic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, Mid 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP
A wonderful collection of obscure solo acoustic guitar tunes from the mid 60s up to the dawn of the 80s – beautiful work from a slew of players we've never heard of – but we'd put right up there with Fahey and Basho in the way they reach from the back porch to the cosmos with just their ... On The Waters Edge
Mississippi, Late 20s. New Copy
Bluesy material, but all sung in French – and recorded in Louisiana during the 78rpm era by Blind Uncle Gaspard and Delma Lachney! The music here is all from vintage 78s, and is a definite precursor to later cajun sounds – but done at a level that's more acoustic blues styled overall ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mississippi, Late 20s/1930s/1940s. New Copy
The title's a great one for the nature of the collection – a mixture of obscure folk, blues, and old-time music – most of it made by relatively recent immigrants to the US! The package does a great job of drawing strands between early styles of music that were recorded for 78rpm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Haunted Brain
Unheard-Of, 2014. New Copy
Wonderful musings from the haunted brain of Russell Hoke – a timeless album of indie, outsider material – sung and played by Hoke on guitar, banjo, and harmonica – with the same blend of folk and blues as in his 80s recordings! The songs are better-formed here, but still recorded ... LP, Vinyl record album

Village Thing/Lion/Wah Wah (Spain), 1972. New Copy
Tightly grooving folk rock from Hunt & Turner – far less hippy dippy than so many groups of the ilk, and focusing an really tight, guitar & melody driven sound!
