One of the greatest albums so far from mighty Chicago reedman David Boykin – and easily a set that lives up to the rich legacy of avant jazz in the Windy City! There's a depth to the record that comes through right from the very first note – a sense of history and feeling that shows just how much Boykin's developed as a player over the past decade or so – a tenorist with a done that's right up there with Archie Shepp or David Murray at their creative best – really stretching out on some wonderful solos that never fail to dim in imagination or new ideas. The group's a trio – with Alex Wing on bass and James Woodley on drums – which gives the recording an almost ESP Records sort of vibe – and Boykin's the shining star throughout, really knocking us over with his solos on the well-recorded set! Titles include "Blast Off For Love", "Walk Turn Bat Shimmy", "Try Harder", "Blue Lotus", "Star Book", and "Late Night With The David Boykin Trio Theme".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sonic Healing Ministries, 2001. New Copy
A raw, live set from Chicago saxophonist David Boykin – but a great little record that really reminds us of a classic 60s session on ESP! Boykin's reeds are wonderful throughout – filled with the depth of soul we might expect from Kalaparusha or Albert Ayler – and set up here in ... CD

Sonic Healing Ministries, 2004. New Copy
A great lost performance from David Boykin's Expanse group – one of the boldest forces in Chicago underground jazz a few years back! The lineup here is great – with Boykin on tenor, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Josh Abrams on bass, James Baker on piano, and Myron Cherry on drums – ... CD

Blue Note (Japan), 1961. New Copy
A seminal set of work from guitarist Grant Green – and one of his famous quartet outings with the great Sonny Clark on piano! These sessions have gone onto become the stuff of legend – argued by some as Green's finest moments at Blue Note – yet oddly, the label didn't issue most ... CD

Don't let the cover fool you – because the album's not the Hank Mobley album with John Jenkins on alto, nor the Blue Note 1550 quintet session – but instead some unreleased material with the great Sonny Clark on piano! The group's a five piece, with Kenny Dorham on trumpet – but ... CD

Muse/Soul Brother (UK), 1977. New Copy
One of a rare few electric albums from the great Walter Bishop Jr – a pianist who started during the bop years, but really grew into new modes in the 70s! The set's an album on Muse, but one with the same hip grooves as Walter Bishop's pair of excellent albums for the Black Jazz label – ... CD

Apples + Oranges
Singlespeed, 2013. New Copy
The title's a great one for this project – especially if you understand the older reference of the saying – as the quintet manages to keep all the separate instruments at a level that's very distinct and individual, yet somehow creates a musical space of comparison as well! Cory Wright' ... CD

Soul Brother/Expansion (UK), 1977. New Copy
One of our favorite albums ever – and every track is a masterpiece! The album was originally cut for the tiny Chiaroscuro label in 1977 – and it's got a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – soaring, soulful, jazzy, and righteous – wrapped up in a blend that's ... CD
