Seminal work from Freddie Hubbard – an early hardbop session that features some great work by Tina Brooks on tenor, piano by McCoy Tyner, and rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass Clifford Jarvis on drums! And although Freddie's great at this early point in his career – playing with a brash, urgent tone that's totally compelling – we're even bigger fans of the Tina Brooks work on this record! Brooks' tone is amazing – right up there with the style he used on his own rare few Blue Note sides, full of fresh fire and a really edgey approach to the tenor – and together with Hubbard, he helps craft a tight little set that's one of Hubbard's best-ever straight sides from the 60s. Titles include "But Beautiful", "One Mint Julep", "Hub's Nub", "Open Sesame", and "Gypsy Blue".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Breeding Of Mind
Groove Merchant, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
Wonderfully baroque funk from the great O'Donel Levy! The album's got some very cool arrangements by Manny Albam that mix together strings and funk – in a super-dope way that sounds a lot like the work coming out of Cadet during the late 60s – and the rest of the set features Levy ... Atlantis
Saturn, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)
An incredible record from Sun Ra! The session was recorded in New York in the late 60s – and it features Ra playing the "solar sound instrument", which is actually a modified Hohner Clavinet, used here with some really spooky sounds! The setting of the album is spare and moody ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1960. New Copy (reissue)
Coltrane plays the blues, but in a way like nobody else – stepping off of the deeply soulful sound of his late Prestige years, and moving into even more open and exploratory space for Atlantic! The setting is bare bones and simple – and many of these numbers begin with the sort of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dave Burns
Vanguard, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)
One of the few albums ever cut by trumpeter Dave Burns – an excellent batch of soul jazz numbers with a comfortable easy swing that will make you wonder why he wasn't a much bigger success! Dave played trumpet briefly in the Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington groups – and at the time ... LP, Vinyl record album
Black Byrd
Blue Note, 1973. New Copy (reissue)
A landmark album – Donald Byrd's first session with producer Larry Mizell, the man who went onto forever change the face of jazz funk! Blowing In From Chicago
Blue Note, 1957. New Copy (reissue)
A landmark session that features two of the greatest tenor talents to emerge from the rich Chicago scene of the 50s! Jordan was well-known to jazz fans, or would be within a few years – but Gilmore's rarely heard in this sort of setting, as most of his recording career was spent in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Two Souls In One
Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)
One of the most wonderful albums by one of our favorite jazz artists of all time! For this unique session, George Braith offers up "two souls in one" – by playing both soprano sax and "stritch" simultaneously – in a two-reed mode that recalls the work of Roland Kirk ... LP, Vinyl record album
Inner Urge
Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue)
A fantastic session of 60s "new thing" jazz – and one of our favorite early records by Joe Henderson! The album features some incredibly hard playing from Joe – with a very dark edge to his solos that's nicely offset by McCoy Tyner's lyrical piano, and the supple rhythms of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Good Move
Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)
Freddie Roach always makes a good move on his Blue Note sessions – going for a lean and tight style on the organ that never fails to please! Blackjack
Blue Note, 1967. New Copy (reissue)
An incredible album from Donald Byrd – hard, funky, and with more of an edge than most of his other Blue Note work! The sound on the album's incredibly sinister – really concerned with downward chord turns in moody rhythms – played with a real sense of soul by a frontline that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Jazz Haus (Germany), Early 50s. New Copy
Rare work from female pianist Jutta Hipp – an artist who's probably known to most for her Blue Note sessions of the 50s, but who's heard here on some German recordings from younger years! Most of the material is live, but well-recorded – and even at this point, Hipp's touch on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
