What's The Word – Socially Conscious Soul MusicVarious
CD (Item 593428) Backbeats (UK), Early 70s — Condition: New Copy
Killer cuts from some of the most righteous years in soul music – that crucial early 70s stretch when the message was hitting the mainstream – through amazingly powerful music like this! The tracks here are a great mix of political classics and some lesser-known gems from the underground – most of which are even harder than the hits, and really help show the range of sounds that were coming out of this important moment. Most tracks are plenty darn funky – an extra "punch" in the rhythms that really helps send home the lyrics – and titles include "We Gotta Bust Out Of The Ghetto (parts 1 & 2)" by Moody Scott, "Who's Gonna Help A Brother Get Further" by Lee Dorsey, "Son Of A Son Of A Slave" by Larry Darnell, "Blessed Are Those Who Struggle" by The Last Poets, "False Faces" by Billy Paul, "Sunday Morning People" by Harrison Kennedy, "Bring The Boys Home" by Freda Payne, "Hey Brother" by The Identities, "I Am Somebody (part 1)" by Brothers & Sisters, and "Peace Go With You Brother" by Gil Scott Heron. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
