A later album by Jimmy – recorded in a smooth slick jazz funk mode, a bit like the style that Jimmy Smith used on some of his Mercury recordings. The organ of Jimmy is augmented by keyboards played by Pat Rebillot and Paul Griffin – which makes for a nice mix of organ and electric piano sounds, plus some occasional moog that's very nicely placed! If you're not looking for full out funk, this is actually a great little album – with some wonderful little steppers that come across in a cool mellow jazz funk way. Titles include "Flexible Flyer", "Sky Hawk", "Grandma's Toe Jam", and "Bullfrog". (Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Blues For Mister Jimmy
Sue, Mid 60s. Very Good
Classic hard-wailing organ from Jimmy, pressed up nice and loud on this original Sue album. Most of the cuts are short, with the deep R&B groove that made his best Sue records really work. Titles include "Sho Nuff", "Turn Blue", "Bump De Bump", "Cash ... LP, Vinyl record album

Topkapi
Sue, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A very unusual album for Jimmy – but a great one too! The set breaks the mode of Jimmy's small combo Sue work and features his organ amidst some larger arrangements from Fred Norman – a blend of skipping strings and jazzy rhythms that really lets Jimmy open up and groove around the top ... Way You Look Tonight
Solid State, Late 60s. Very Good- Gatefold
Damn, Jimmy's always great! Even in a session like this – the kind of obscure, almost "off the books" sort of album, Jimmy's still giving 110% on the Hammond – grooving with an unnamed group in a mode that recalls the fiercely swinging sound of Groove Holmes at his best in ... Electric Funk
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of Jimmy's funkiest albums ever – a sweeeeet batch of short, hard, and funky cuts – and a record that ranks right up there with the mighty Soul Sugar for sheer funkiness! Jimmy takes an upbeat and easygoing approach to the late 60s funk sound, with a nice, rubbery bass and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Let's Stay Together
Groove Merchant, 1972. Very Good+
An early 70s gem from Jimmy McGriff! Jimmy's grooving with a larger group here – but in a funky 70s mode that makes for a great update of the rawer sound he laid out on some of his Sue sides in the 60s. The best tracks are the covers of 70s soul material – like "Shaft", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Veep, 1967. Very Good
Swingin' groovy live set, with a tight combo that races through a good bunch of material – and sounds a lot better than the live groups on some of Jimmy's Sue albums from the time. The whole thing was recorded in Newark, NJ – the home of pure organ grooves – at the legendary ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thing To Come By
Solid State, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
A real solid groover, and one that we passed up for many years, mistakenly, because the cover looks kind of boring! On the inside, though, the record's filled with lots of nice tasty tracks, and it's got a sinister bubbling under funky feel that's just great. Includes the monster cut "Charlot ... Soul Sugar
Capitol, 1971. Good+
A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Man-Child
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
Funky mid 70s Herbie – one his funkiest of the era! Herbie plays a host of kool keyboards (like Fender Rhodes, Arp, Hohner Clavinet, etc), and he's joined by a group that includes just about all of the Headhunters (Paul Jackson and Mike Clark in the rhythm section), as well as Wah Wah Watson ... Lonesome Traveler
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
An excellent example of the massive groove that Ray Bryant set up during his 60s years at Cadet – a simple soul jazz trio style, but augmented with dual horn backing – which makes for a tightly stepping sound that's all-soulful, all the way! Bryant's left hand is nice and hard on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny's Time
Jazzland, Late 50s/1962. Very Good+
Nice batch of tracks that had been recorded earlier in Rollins career (during the late 50s), but which were unearthed in 1962 in an effort to cash in on Rollins' return to jazz playing. Even though the motivation behind the album was a bit mercenary, though, it's a nice thing that it came out ... LP, Vinyl record album
