A wonderful mid 70s side from Konitz, joined here by a lithe quintet that features Ted Brown on tenor, and Rufus Rei, Albert Dailey and Joe Chambers in the rhythm section. Konitz plays both soprano and alto here, his coolly lyrical playing and warm tone sounding as great as ever on a set of originals by Konitz and Brown, with one Tristano number, too: "Figure & Spirit", "Dream Stepper", "Smog Eyes", 'April", "Featherbed" and "Dig It".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Spirits
Milestone, 1971. Very Good+
A nice little session from Lee Konitz – simple, without many tricks, and a great 70s extension of the sound of his 50s work! The group's a quartet with Sal Mosca on piano – and on a number of tracks, the pair of them play together alone, Lee blowing introspectively, and Sal working in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Timespan
Wave (UK), Late 50s. Very Good+
Whether you're a Konitz fanatic or not (we are!), this set's a great one – even though it's made up of an assortment of different recordings from the late 50s and very early 60s. Peter Ind was the bassist in some of Konitz's groups during the late 50s, and he recorded most of this material ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Totally cool Jimmy Smith album that has him playing a lot of funky groovy versions of TV and Film themes, like "Goldfinger", "Theme From The Munsters", "Theme From Man With the Golden Arm", and "Theme From Bewitched". Oliver Nelson leads a large band and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Experiment
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint-
A wonderful session of hip soul jazz tracks from Freddie Hubbard – mostly short tight and groovy, but played with a sophisticated style that points the way towards the soul jazz sound of the 70s. Soul Experiment is a fitting title – as Freddie works hard with hip players like Billy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1968. Very Good+
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey on his own is great enough at this point – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spirit Of 67
Impulse, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the great albums that Pee Wee Russell recorded for Impulse during the late 60's, when they brought him back for some great comeback LPs in a number of different settings. This one has him playing as the main soloist with Oliver Nelson's orchestra. As with most of Nelson's work from the 60's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Mid/Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
70's 2-fer that brings together 2 of Jackie McLean's classic bop albums for Prestige – Lights Out and 4, 5, & 6. The groups include Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Elmo Hope, and Mal Waldron. The tracks are longish, and McLean's tone is very raw, much rawer than on some of his Blue Note ... LP, Vinyl record album

Discovered Again!
Sheffield Labs, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
To tell the truth, we didn't know he'd ever been lost – but who cares anyway, as the album captures Dave in his best 70s fusion mode! The album's got some great mellow tunes that bubble along with a sweet electric feel – gliding in that Grusin way that was never that funky, but which ... LP, Vinyl record album

CTI, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing second CTI set from Freddie Hubbard – one that takes off nicely from Red Clay territory, and starts to hit an even funkier mode! Le Spank
AVI, 1977. Near Mint-
Seems throwaway from the package – which has a bare ass being spanked on the cover – but the album's actually a pretty slick batch of jazzy disco tracks from the great Rinder & Lewis team! The cornerstone of the album's the group's 10 minute groover "Le Spank" – a ... LP, Vinyl record album
