An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years before the album came out – which is why he's so perfectly formed at the start. And like Maurice White, another soul star who spent many years woodshedding all over the place before hitting the majors, Frankie has the talent to lead the group to a unique place in the star system of soul – a unique orbit that was important to mellow soul as Earth Wind & Fire's was to funk. The record features some unbelievably amazing numbers, gems that shine again year after year, no matter where you hear them – on an AM radio, a crusty old tape in a car stereo, or bursting out of the grooves of this beautiful LP. Great ones include the sublime stepper "Happy Feelin's", the smooth mellow groover "While I'm Alone", and the tightly compressed "Look At California". (Missing inner sleeve. Cover has some wear and a cutout notch. Label has a bit of pen.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Capitol, 1981. Very Good+
One of THE 80s groove classics – an excellent album that never gets old! The BB&Q Band had a tight outta site style that was the best small combo 80s version of 70s mainstream funk – sweetly jazzy, thanks to some really spacious production, and filled with lots of hard-stepping ... Soul Serenade
Capitol, Early 60s. Very Good-
King plays the "all time favorites" on his soulful tenor, including instrumental classics like "Wiggle Wobble", "Night Train", "Honky Tonk", "Soul Twist", "Watermelon Man", and "Swingin' Shepherd Blues". The real hit, though, is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild Is Love
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+
Nice album of baroque soul from this Chicago diva. Recorded after her big hit "Tell Him", this one has her moving into a more sophisticated style, in which she sings a suite of songs by Dotti Wayne and Ray Rasch. Richard Evans did the arrangements, and the whole thing is a great relic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Storm
Capitol, 1977. Sealed Gatefold
A definite love storm from Tavares – a set that has the group's vocal approach honed to perfection – really soaring high with some sweet clubby arrangements from Freddie Perren! The album came at a time when the group was riding high on mainstream disco fame – but it's hardly a ... LP, Vinyl record album

An oft-overlooked gem by Funkadelic – the group's last album for Westbound, and a record that really has them growing into a great new groove! Bootsy and Eddie Hazel have stepped aside for the set, but that gives Bernie Worrell plenty of room to work his magic on keyboards – in a way ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gettin' Down To It
King, 1969. Very Good- Gatefold
A great little album by James Brown – and very different than his other work! He cut this one with the groovy Dee Felice Trio – a jazz-based combo that he recorded on their own for King, on another very rare, very excellent record. Motown, 1973. Very Good-
An amazing record that stunned the world almost as much as Marvin's previous effort, What's Going On. Plenty of darkness here from Phil Upchurch – those great tones and notes he worked so well back in the 70s – all with that near-perfect quality that made him one of the most in-demand players of his day! Grazin'
RCA, 1969. Very Good-
A beautiful album of pop soul tracks, recorded by a group that was once (along with the 5th Dimension) part of the legendary Rex Middleton's Hi-Fi's from LA. The record sports their hit vocal version of Hugh Masekela's "Grazing In The Grass", with the great "I can dig it" line, ... LP, Vinyl record album
