One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray coming down hard on conga, and working with a group that features Adalberto Santiago on lead vocals, plus Orestes Vilato on timbales, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Luis Cruz on piano. The sound is spare and raw – and titles include the wonderfully echoey tune "O Elefante", with some great elephant-like work on trumpet – plus "Con El Cimarron", "Se Traba", "Arrepientete", and "Te Traigo Mi Son". (Original multi-color label pressing! Cover has light wear and a bit of splitting on the top seam.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

La Cuna
CTI, 1981. Near Mint-
A nice jammer from the "second wind" period of CTI – and a strong return to Latin jazz for Ray! The set's a great mixture of smooth CTI electric funk and Latin-oriented grooves – and it features work by Ray on congas and percussion, plus a list of players that includes Tito ... Head Sounds
Fania, 1972. Very Good+
"Head Sounds" is a heck of a great way to describe this album – as it's filled with some of Ray's most mind-expanding cuts! The album kicks off with the tune "Acid", which you probably know from the album of the same name, but which still really does a great job of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Irresistible
Fania, 1989. Very Good+
Ray Barretto's not looking too "irresistible" on the cover of this one – thanks to a too-white costume and sock-less loafers – but the record's still a great one, with a nicely jazzy vibe throughout! The album was Ray's last for Fania, but it's by no means a contract-filler ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fania, Late 60s. Very Good+
Pacheco grooving hard in his second period – working with his "Nuevo Tumbao" group, with a lot more focus on percussion than on his earlier albums. Plenty of firey timbales – and lead vocals by Pete Conde Rodriguez. Titles include "Azucar Mami", "Negra Bon ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fania, 1977. Very Good Gatefold
A very cool soundtrack album written, arranged, and produced by Willie Colon – and with a sound that's unlike anything you'll hear on his own albums from the time! Most of the tracks are instrumentals, and they have a haunting mix of styles that includes modern charanga, Latin jazz, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1959. Very Good-
This one's a bit subdued, but it's still classic RCA material by Tito – with a strong easy Latin vibe, of the sort that went down very big with the Catskills crowd. The record's got plenty of Cha Cha and Mambo Latin jazz tracks, most of which are covers, apart from the originals "Dancing ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzy mambos from the king – and easily the most successful of Perez Prado's albums for RCA in the 50s! The album showcases the Latin mode that Prado crossed over big with on his hit "Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White" – a tune that almost single-handedly grabbed the ... LP, Vinyl record album
