Twisting The Jug

LP (Item 44267) Prestige, 1961 — Condition: Used

LP, Vinyl record album

5.00 5

Despite the title, the set's not a batch of cheapo "twist" tracks – and is instead a great soul jazz set, with added conga work by Ray Barretto to make the tracks dance lightly, perhaps in a manner that Prestige thought would pass for a "twist". The tracks are longish and laidback – and the group features Jack McDuff on organ, working here on a very early set for the label, plus Joe Newman trumpet, Wendell Marshall bass, Walter Perkins drums, and Ray Barretto conga. Tracks include "Twistin The Jug", "Moten Swing", "Down The Line", and "Born To Be Blue". (Silver & black label pressing with a NJ address & Van Gelder stamp.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Blue Gene
Prestige, Late 50s. Very Good-
Way more than just an album with Gene Ammons as a leader – and instead, a set that truly earns the "all stars" listed on the cover – thanks to a great array of supporting players, and a very loose, open-ended jam session style that lets everyone get in plenty of solo space! ... Polydor, 1972. Very Good
A pretty wild album – and a really wonderful mixture of funky fusion and Spanish guitar, featuring tunes written by flamenco guitarist Sabicas, backed by arrangements handled by funky guitarist Joe Beck!
