A brilliant album from Kenny Dorham – one of his more far-reaching efforts, with the expansive compositional style that he started bringing to some of his Blue Note work of the early 60s. The record features a group with Jackie McLean on alto, Bobby Timmons on piano, Teddy Smith on bass, and JC Moses on drums – all working with Kenny in a slightly Latin tinged mode that features some really shimmering trumpet work! The record features a stunning 3 part reading of McLean's haunting tune "Melanie" (done under his name on the album A Fickle Sonance) – plus the tracks "Prelude", "El Matador", "Smile", and "There Goes My Heart". (Cover has a cut corner.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Modern Art
United Artists, 1958. Good
A seminal session as a leader by the young Art Farmer – recorded for United Artists, and a great set of tight lyrical tunes, played by Farmer in his sparkling style – in a group along with Benny Golson on tenor and Bill Evans on piano. Evans is a special treat here, as the 1958 session ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paris Blues – Original Soundtrack
United Artists, 1961. Very Good
We've always loved Duke Ellington's soundtracks, and this is one of his best! The score is a moody introspective one, written for a 1961 film that starred Paul Newman as a frustrated jazz musician living in Paris. The "Paris Blues" theme is a dark, somber composition that is supposedly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Proof that the serious compositional intentions of MJQ member John Lewis could more than be fulfilled – and a nice dramatic score that features a few themes that would later be taken up more fully by Lewis' group. This is the small combo recording of tracks from the legendary jazz score to I Want To Live! A real corker from Benny Carter's revival period at the end of the 50s – a large group session recorded with a very strong horn section, arranged and produced by Benny himself! The album's got a "calendar" gimmick – in that each of the 12 songs feature a month in the name ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most free-wheeling Sonny Rollins albums of the 60s – an album that features some very long, extended tracks that really break out from some of the straighter moments of Sonny's mid-60s recordings! A great one from George Shearing – beautifully restrained, but coming across with these Latin grooves that are mighty nice too! The title's a bit of a shocker – in that that we don't normally think of Herb as a bluesy player – but it's pretty darn honest, given the great sound of this set!
