Art Blakey — Cu-Bop ... CD 18.99

A rare Jubilee Records album from Art Blakey – one of his non-Blue Note sets from the late 50s, cut during the year of 1957 – a time when the Jazz Messengers were hopping around a lot of different labels! This version of the group is searing and soulful – and features Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Sam Dockery on piano, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – plus the unusual addition of Sabu Martinez on conga, rocking and rollicking alongside Blakey's drums in an amazing way! The set's quite different than some of Art's "with percussion" dates for Blue Note – as Sabu's congas kind of just set an extra fire to the hardbop groove – giving it a slight Latin flavor, but more than anything, just getting in a wicked edge that really cooks up the session. Griffin is great, as always, and the album features four long tracks "Woddyn You", "Sakeena", "Shorty", and "Dawn On The Desert".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Blue Note (Japan), 1961. New Copy
One of our favorite albums ever from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – but a set that was unreleased by Blue Note for quite a few years! The set's one of two gems the group recorded in 1961, but which were held back until the end of the 60s – and it features a stellar version of the ... CD

Epic (Japan), Late 30s. New Copy
An excellent collection of early work recorded under Johnny Hodges' name in the early years – sessions from 1938 and 1939 that were originally issued on 78s, but presented here in a sweet 50s LP with a classic cover image from William Steig! The tracks are a great assortment of small group ... CD
Soliloquy
Columbia (Japan), 1957. New Copy
A very personal album from Erroll Garner, as you might guess from the title – a set of solo piano numbers delivered with an even deeper sense of lyricism than usual! Garner's still got a bit of his trademark sense of rhythm here, but he also works with a more powerful sense of flow – ... CD
Golden Boy
Colpix/EMI (Japan), 1963. New Copy
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from ... CD

Kudu/King (Japan), 1973. New Copy

United Artists/EMI (Japan), 1962. New Copy
A brilliant album from Kenny Dorham – one of his more far-reaching efforts, with the expansive compositional style that he started bringing to some of his Blue Note work of the early 60s! The record features a group with Jackie McLean on alto, Bobby Timmons on piano, Teddy Smith on bass, and ... CD
Roost/EMI (Japan), 1955. New Copy
Sonny Stitt plus the early genius of Quincy Jones – a really great combination that makes for a standout session on Roost! As you might guess with Quincy handling the arrangements, the gorup here is bigger than usual for Stitt – especially given that the bulk of his Roost sessions were ... CD
