Calling Out Of Context
CD (Item 80389) Audika, Mid 80s/Early 90s — Condition: New Copy
A great collection of unreleased recordings by the great, largely unheralded Arthur Russell – one of the key players in the late 70s/early 80s NY underground – whose influence can be found everywhere from the smoky disco of the Paradise Garage scene to the dubby, arrhythmic, and percussive pounding of the post punk era! If you know anything about Russell, you know he hated to be nailed down. He's a classically trained cellist, who made his name producing now legendary disco numbers for Loose Joints and others. He went into the 80s exploring the kind of harder charging, minimalist grooving vibe that was kicked into effect by the unholy union of punk and dance music, but unlike some of the others Arthur still carried the soulful musicality of the 70s. The 12 tracks here are culled from sessions cut between 1985 and 1990 when Russell was signed to Rough Trade – and have gone completely unreleased until now! Most feature Russell on almost unrecognizable ambient cello, hypnotic vocals, and some of the coolest 80s drum programming you'll ever hear – with lots of cool synth notes and effects overdubbed, often with Peter Zummo on trombone and Mustafa Ahmed on percussion. It's really hypnotic, fairly raw, quite left of center but still very groovy stuff! If you appreciate the Ze Records scene, and all of those the great reissues of the NY post punk and disco years, this is totally essential! Tracks include "In The Deer Forest Part 1", "The Platform On The Ocean", "You And Me Both", "Calling Out Of Context", "Arm Around You", "Wild Combination", "Get Around To It" and more. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
