Sergio Mendes & The New Brasil '77

LP, Vinyl record album

4.70 2

One of the funkiest albums Sergio Mendes ever recorded – a monster of a record that's filled with enough dancefloor groovers to have had a big impact on the soul market in the US! There's still elements of the older Mendes modes – especially in the way the vocals float nicely through the mix – but the overall groove is polished 70s soul, with plenty of jazzy touches – similar to the modern soul generation coming up on labels like Capitol or Elektra at the time. The group delivers a landmark version of Stevie Wonder's "The Real Thing" – a killer stepper that's kept the album alive for years – and other tracks include "Why", "Love City", "Mozambique", "Love Me Tomorrow", "P-Ka-Boo", and "Peninsula". Listen To Me
Fontana, 1968. Very Good+
A beautiful blend of bossa and jazz – one of the few American albums cut by Luiz Henrique, and a set that features him singing in English throughout! The sound is wonderful – a light and lively take on Brazilian bossa, filtered a bit through cool American 60s modes – very much in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Happy People
Pablo, 1979. Very Good+
Jazzy Brazilian drummer Paulinho Da Costa lays down a set of tight fusion cuts recorded in the U.S., along with folks like Larry Carlton, James Gadson, and Philip Bailey. There's vocals on about half the tracks, and the sound is sort of LA studio fusion from the 70's, with a nice bit of Brazil ... LP, Vinyl record album

So Nice (Pickwick pressing)
Pickwick, Mid 60s. Very Good
Sort of a repackaging of the Brasil '65 album on Capitol – done here in a pressing by Pickwick that features a very psychedelic cover! The record's a mixed bag of tracks that has some bossa piano trio stuff, plus some vocal cuts with Wanda De Sah, the alto and flute of Bud Shank, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
