Gil Scott-Heron — Winter In America ... LP 11.99

A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever! The record has a completely sophisticated jazzy approach – one that's miles ahead from even Gil's previous work on Flying Dutchman, and which shows him to be one of the most distinctive and emotive vocalists in soul and jazz over the past 25 years. The album contains the monster dancefloor track "The Bottle", which went on to be a huge hit in many versions – but it's also got loads of gentle, fragile songs (the kind of work by Gil that we like the best, and which show him as a deeply emotional and complicated artist, with a richness that still yearns to be tapped fully. Classics include "Peace Go With You Brother" and the original version of "Your Daddy Loves You".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Our favorite-ever album from Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that we'd easily rank as one of our favorite soul records of the 70s! Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album
First Minute Of A New Day
Arista/TVT, 1975. New Copy (reissue)
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Casablanca, 1976. New Copy (reissue)
An oft-overlooked gem from Parliament – released during the year 1976, and sometimes hidden between monster LPs like Funkentelechy and Mothership Connection – but every bit as great as those two classics! The album's got that tightened-up P-Funk sound that was working so perfectly at ... LP, Vinyl record album
Miami
TK/Drive, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
Cool compressed sounds from Miami – a group who are still plenty funky on this rare third album, but one who've also found a great way to serve up their groove as well! From A Whisper To A Scream
Kudu, 1971. New Copy (reissue)
One of our favorite-ever albums from Esther Phillips – an album that really helped her transform her sound for the 70s! Flying Dutchman, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)
The revolutionary soul classic – a benchmark set that that brings together the most essential cuts from Gil Scott-Heron's first 3 albums on Flying Dutchman! Polydor, 1971. New Copy (reissue)
One of the wilder James Brown instrumental LPs from the late King period. The James Brown Band is fronted by a heavy fuzzy guitar sound, which gives the LP a sort of rock-break feel, with nice fuzzy electric tones. All tracks are by James and Dave Matthews, and the record is sort of a second ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hot Pants
Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
A real killer from James Brown – and one of his most open-ended LPs of the early 70s! The record's got tracks that kind of go a lot further than those on many of James' other albums (except maybe Payback, which has loads of long cuts) – and it includes an extended 9 minute reading of ... A mid 70s Bay Area soul treasure by The Variations – with lone female vocalist Samaki given a more prominent presence – and it's the funkiest album the group ever cut!
