A super huge hit for George – the record that took him from being a funky jazz guitarist into an R&B superstar! The album features George playing and singing over arrangements by Claus Ogerman – some of Ogerman's best of the 70s, ones that mix together his trademark pillow of sound with a slightly funky bounce. The result is incredible – and the album is filled with loads of great songs – including George's excellent version of Bobby Womack's "Breezin", the hit version of "This Masquerade", and the cuts "So This Is Love", "Six To Four", and "Affirmation".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A real killer from vibesman Mike Mainieri – a set that's got a darker edge than some of his previous work, while still hanging onto all the warm touches of his own instrument in the lead! Backings are full, but never uptight – and there's a loosness to the record that really works well ... CD

One of the most hard-hitting Jimmy McGriff albums of the 70s – a raw live date recorded in Newark – and a set that's a perfect bridge between the sharp soul of his Sue Records sessions and his later funk to come! The whole thing's got a gritty vibe the really recalls the sound of a ... CD

A stunning early set as a leader from Elvin Jones – both a tremendous demonstration of the free energy he let loose after the passing of John Coltrane, and a set that's also still got some key Coltrane-esque elements! As with other Jones albums to follow, Elvin's got some key reedmen on hand ... CD

Groovy Stanley Turrentine – blowing soulfully over larger arrangements by Thad Jones – swinging and lively, with a mod 60s pop feel that makes the album quite different than most of Turrentine's other work for Blue Note! The approach is one that we should hate, given how much we love ... CD
