CD (Item 480475) Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2009 -- Condition: New Copy
Anthony Joseph really blows the roof off with this one -- sounding better than ever before, thanks to some massively righteous grooves from the Spasm Band! The music's a compelling mix of spiritual jazz, funky rhythms, and hip recitations from Joseph -- who's mostly speaking on the set, but also sings a bit too -- all in this rough-edged style that's totally great! A few elements of the record sound contemporary, but the overall approach is mostly in the territory of some older soul jazz side from the 70s -- instrumentation that includes tenor, alto, flute, guitar, and plenty of odd percussion instruments -- and guest trombone from Joseph Bowie on about half the album. Joseph's music has never sounded better, and the spirit of this one is very much in the Build An Ark side of the spectrum -- but with an even harder-edged feel.
