Negcaumongus
LP (Item 606534) Cadence, 1981 — Condition: New Copy
Beaver Harris always has an amazing way of holding things together – a kind of soulful unity he seems to have learned from Archie Shepp – which really holds our interest in a long-form record like this! The title track spans most of both sides of the album – the searing original "Necaumongus", performed by a group that features Harris on drums, Ken McIntyre on alto and flute, Ricky Ford on tenor, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, Cameron Brown on bass, and Don Pullen on piano – all coming together with sounds that are bold one minute, sensitive the next – a depth of performance that's simply breathtaking, especially as the piece hits its more sensitive second half. The album follows with "Well Kept Secret", a tune that's a bit more offbeat, yet still has its own core too – and which features unusual steel drum work from Francis Hayes! © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
