One of the fine fine albums of spacey keyboard funk that Charles cut for the Mercury label during the late 70s. Earland starts with a Herbie Hancock approach – and no surprise, he's got Paul Jackson and Harvey Mason in the group – but then he changes the groove to show off more of his funky soul jazz roots, and comes up with a sound that has a bit of a Mizell touch, with a nice soulful groove, still underpinned by some great jazzy conceptions. Titles include a cover of a Stevie Wonder's "I Wish", plus "Betty Boop", "Singing A Song For You", "Shining Bright", and "Revelation". (Cover has some light wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Great Pyramid
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+
Strong work in Charles' post-Prestige mode – the style in which he turned his keyboard skills to other non-Hammond instruments, like Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and mini-moog. Tracks are a mix of smooth soulful numbers and more jazz funk oriented ones – and the whole thing's got a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mercury, 1952. Very Good
Oscar Peterson plays pretty – but doesn't he always? The set's a classic bit of early Peterson – a 10" LP recorded by Norman Granz, packaged in a David Stone Martin cover, and featuring a trio that includes Irving Ashby and Ray Brown. The tunes are mostly ballads, given that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great Guitar Sounds
Mercury/Wing, Mid 50s/1959. Very Good
A great 50s session from guitarist Bill Harris – known for his work in The Clovers, but a great jazz player as well! The sound here is really unique – very different than even his other albums of the time – in that Bill is playing solo acoustic guitar, in a style that's almost ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz School
Mercury/EmArcy, 1956. Very Good-
A compilation of Joe Gordon, Art Mardigan, Paul Gonsalves and Clark Terry each leading their own bands on a couple of tracks. All of the players and songs are too numerous to mention here but, for instance, the record features Art Mardigan on drums and he is joined by such performers as Milt Gold ... LP, Vinyl record album

Percussion At Work
Mercury, Late 50s. Very Good+
A percussion-heavy batch of tracks that has Pete Rugolo starting from a mode explored heavily in the hi-fi years, but taking the genre into much jazzier territory! With the help of a large group of west coast players – including Don Fagerquist, Larry Bunker, Herbie Harper, Frank Rosolini, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Inside Straight
Fantasy, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of Cannonball Adderley's late funky sessions for Fantasy – and a record that still features some mighty heavy production from David Axelrod! The album's got that core groove that Axe and Cannon first crafted together at Capitol in the 60s – but the sound here has some definite 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album
