CD (Item 469900) CBS/BGO (UK), 1969/1971 — Condition: New Copy

2 of our favorite albums from the enigmatic Georgie Fame – both recorded right at a perfect point in his career! Seventh Son is a set that still has Fame working in some of the older American modes of his roots, but which also pushes past jazz and R&B towards some much hipper territory! The styles here show a bit of a singer/songwriter mode – even though Georgie didn't write the tracks – and the album makes great uses of that sweetly compressed sound that Fame brought naturally to his work, but balances that with some nicely dynamic arrangements played by a host of top-shelf British jazz musicians. The sound is quite hard to describe adequately, but let's call it a bursting forth of the charm and inventiveness that we always knew Fame had inside of him, but never got full exposure until now! Titles include "Blossom", "Ho Ho Ho", "Inside Story", "Am I Wasting My Time", "Is It Really The Same", "Bird In A World Of People", and "Somebody Stole My Thunder". Going Home is an album that's far more soulful and laidback than some of Fame's earlier sets, and filled with wonderful tunes that really sparkle with warmth and imagination! Georgie didn't write the tunes himself, but he's done a great job here of pulling them together – picking put work that's more mature and a bit less gimmicky than his early hits – and singing them alongside gentle backings from Keith Mansfield that often include a bit of electric piano, used in a way that further emphasizes the adult soul side of the tracks – in a way that's almost like Kenny Rankin, whose "Peaceful" is sung very nicely here. Titles include "Going Home", "I Believe In Love", "Happiness", "Children Of My Mind", "Lay Me Down", "Sister Jane", "Peaceful", "It Won't Hurt To Try It", and "Foolish Style".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
