A huge breakout moment for disco in the 70s – the first album from Silver Convention, a very early example of the European power on the club scene! The group's the brainchild of arranger Sylvester Levay and producer Michael Kunze – who come up with some great German disco rhythms for the record, mixed with soaring female trio vocals, by a group that includes two German gals and American soul singer Roberta Kelly! The vocal approach is similar to that 70s Philly group mode – popularized by First Choice, Three Degrees, and others – and pumped it up with the Munich sound of throbbing bass and heavy beats, which was arguably one of the first steps towards house music in the 80s. Titles include the huge hit "Fly Robin Fly", plus "Save Me", "I Like It", "Chains Of Love", "Tiger Baby", "Always Another Girl", and "Heart Of Stone".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The ... Sylvers
Pride, 1972. Very Good+
The first album by The Sylvers – a hard soulful band made up of youngsters from LA, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as a sweet blend ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shades In Creation
Turbo, 1977. Near Mint-
Not the greatest album by this East Coast funk band – and one that shows them hitting a bit more of a crossover club sound, with lots of up-tempo funk tracks that kind of aim for a disco groove. Fortunately, the instrumentation's pretty good – and the album actually has some nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Darkness, Darkness
Blue Thumb, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Plenty of darkness here from Phil Upchurch – those great tones and notes he worked so well back in the 70s – all with that near-perfect quality that made him one of the most in-demand players of his day! The style here is a bit different than some of Phil's previous work in Chicago ... LP, Vinyl record album
