I Am What I Am

The legendary Marva Whitney's never sounded better – thanks to some incredible backings by Osaka Monaurail – the current funk combo who return Marva's vocals to the greatness of her years with James Brown! The sound here is lean and mean – that razor-sharp approach to funky soul that James first gave Marva back in the day, and which Osaka Monaurail reproduce beautifully – with a sound that avoids any of the cliches or too-modern styles that cropped up in other later Whitney recordings. The grooves here are incredible – guitars vamping on top of funky drums, underneath a brace of tight horns that glide wonderfully with Marva's legendary vocals. The album features a few great original tunes that stand beautifully next to her classics – and titles include "I Am What I Am (parts 1 & 2)", "Let A Sister Come In & Wrapp Things Up (part 3)", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose (parts 1 & 2)", "We Sing Soul", "Every Little Bit Hurts", and "Soulsisters Of The World Unite". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
