Sophisticated Swing
CD (Item 612245) EmArcy (Japan), 1957 — Condition: New Copy
Forget the "sophisticated" – and concentrate on the "swing"! This early killer from Cannonball Adderley swings all the way – and it features a young Cannon blowing hard with a tight little combo that's kind of a precursor of his hit recordings on Riverside a few years later. Brother Nat's on cornet, and the rhythm's by Junior Mance on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – a really great trio who help give the set some of the soul jazz vibe that Adderley would bring to his later classics for Riverside. Cannonball's solos are choppy and free – a bit more unbridled than on some of his later work, very pinched in tone, which makes for a wonderfully soulful sound.
