The complete recordings from Albert Ayler's 1966 ESP set at Slugs Nightclub – located in his home turf of the East Village, a very fervent setting for avant jazz at the time! The material has a feel that's a lot like Ayler's studio recordings for ESP, but the tracks are longer overall, and feature a bit more interplay between the group members at times – individual solo space that's occasionally a bit more pronounced, running back into some tighter energies from the rest of the group. Ayler's blowing with a lineup that includes his brother Donald Ayler on trumpet, Lewis Worrell on bass, Michel Sampson on violin, and a very young Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums and percussion. This expanded version features better sound and more tracks than previous versions – plus a great cover image too! Titles include "Truth Is Marching On", "Bells", "Ghosts", "Initiation", and "Our Prayer".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Bethlehem, 1955. New Copy
One of the rare key albums cut by bassist Oscar Pettiford as a leader – an excellent 10" session for the Bethlehem label from the 50s! Although best known as a bassist, Pettiford was also a heck of a great player on the cello – which he uses here alongside bass! Pettiford's ... CD

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
Ropeadope, 2013. New Copy
Pretty groovy work from Jonathan Scales – a steel drum player by trade, but one who works here in a mode that's light years from any basic use of the instrument! The core approach is jazz, but the music is also inflected by lots of little twists and turns – a pastiche of styles and ... CD

Brighter Days
Outrageous/Cultures Of Soul, 1977. New Copy
Sublime sounds from the legendary Stanton Davis – a rare 70s gem that's been a favorite of groovehounds for years! The set's got a really unique feel – part spiritual jazz, part soaring club – a blend that's similar to the sound you'd get on James Mason's legendary album too ... CD

Atlantic (Japan), 1963. New Copy
A great album recorded in 1963 for Atlantic – one of our favorite ever! Jack Wilson's one of our favorite piano players, and we rave about him all the time on these pages – and one of the reasons why we love him so much is that he was often accompanied by Roy Ayers, who started out his ... CD
