The first record from Cheeba in many years – and definitely his funkiest so far! The production of this one is right on the money – filled with sharp, funky, 70s-styled riffs – very much in the best blacksploitation style from back in the day! Years back, we'd always like Cheeba's records, but sometimes found them rough around the edges – yet this time around, he's totally got it right – perfect production, just the right amount of space in between the grooves, and key help from some younger session players who really make the whole thing come out right – like a recreation of some hip 70s studio band. Titles include "Paisley Garden", "Looing For My Brother", "Message Force Multipliers", "Extend The Knowledge", "The Denunciation", "Return From Exile", and "2nd & Cedar".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Rejuiced Phat Shake
Legere (France), 2014. New Copy
We're not sure what we think of the title – which has a bit of a 90s ring to it – but the record's got a smoking soulful sound that definitely lives up to previous work from Nick Pride and his combo! The group's equal parts 60s soul and 70s funk – and often blend the two together ... CD

Music For Adverts
Freestyle (UK), 2014. New Copy
Lack Of Afro are back, and fiercer than ever before – really evolved from just a name known for funky remixes and dancefloor grooves, and stepping forward strongly into a much more well-rounded, deeply soulful group! The title's a reference to older Brit sound library albums, but the overall ... CD

Breakin Bread (UK), 2014. New Copy
Massive drums really get things going right for The Getup – a funky combo who hit their groove running from the ground up! These guys load plenty of Hammond, trumpet, and tenor on the top of the tracks – but really seem to get even more energy going on the bottom – thanks to ... CD

Rediscovering The Big Apple
Imagenes (UK), 2013. New Copy
Los Charly's Orchestra rediscover the Big Apple – although given the group's strong approach to Latin music, it's hard to imagine that they'd ever forget the sound of New York! Yet this time around, there's an added element of Latin Soul in the mix – some touches of late 60s and early ... CD

Coolin System
GED Soul, 2011. New Copy
Cool jazz funk from The Coolin' System – a group that lays out a funky backdrop, and one that actually generates plenty of heat despite the group's name! Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and percussion bring the funk, along with a vamping guitar – but what we love about ... CD

Budos Band III
Daptone, 2010. New Copy
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The ... CD

Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD
A wealth of rare group soul and doo wop from the Bay Area scene – a good deal of which has never been issued before! The work here comes from the same Music City studios that have been brought to light in recent years as a treasure trove of 60s soul and 70s funk – and these tracks ... CD

San Francisco Concert
CTI/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy
Really wonderful work from Hubert Laws – maybe one of his greatest albums for CTI! The record has a laidback feel that's similar to most of Laws' other work for the label, but somehow the live setting also brings out a bit more edge – and gives the record a gently funky groove that's ... CD

Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977. New Copy
A real classic from The Manhattans – and just the kind of record to show why the group stayed so great after all the years! The ballads are wonderful – arguably even better than the group's indie label days – with a depth of feeling, fullness of harmonies, and magical balance ... CD

A Japanese-only album from Weather Report – recorded early in the group's career, and with some of the same sort of freedoms that Miles Davis was getting on his own double-length dates from Japan! The tracks here are quite stretched out, and often adventurous – showing a marked ability ... CD

Dore/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy
Superb soul from The Superbs – a great group from the LA scene of the 60s – and one who never cracked the charts as much as their contemporaries! The group mixes a female voice in with the male harmonies – in a style that doesn't always have the female singer in the lead, but ... CD
