One of the rarest early albums by Johnny Lytle – and a very tasty set of tracks that has a slightly different kick than usual. Johnny's regular trio with Milt Harris on organ and Peppy Hinant on drums is joined by Steve Cooper on bass and Ray Barretto on congas – which gives the tracks a fuller sound, and a nicely rolling groove from the conga. The vibes and organ still dominate strongly – which is ok by us – and the sound is opened past Johnny's regular stepping groove. Titles include a number of nice originals like "The House Of Winchester", "Moon Child", and "The Moor Man" – plus "Work Song" and "A Taste Of Honey". (Cover has some light wear, and label has a small bit of pen.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Village Caller
Riverside, 1961. Very Good
A funky vibes classic – and a landmark set from Detroit vibist Johnny Lytle! The set's one of the purest examples of Johnny's great early groove – a tightly stepping version of soul jazz that played big in the clubs at the time, and which has forever made Lytle one of the favorites of ... ABC, 1957. Very Good
A complicated suite of tunes performed with Mulligan and Brookmeyer in the lead – and some occasional solos by Sunkel on cornet! The overall feel steps strongly from both Mulligan and Brookmeyer's styles of the mid 50s – tightly arranged, but with ample enough room for solo expression ... LP, Vinyl record album

Latin Impressions
Riverside, Early 60s. Very Good-
The Latin Impressions here are more Brazilian than Cuban – and maybe a bit Spanish, too – given the strong use of acoustic guitar from Charlie Byrd! The set's got a laidback, open feel – and Byrd's guitar work is mighty deft, yet without all the frills and flowers of some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cuban Fire
Capitol, 1956. Very Good
One of Kenton's greatest records, and the one in which he proves his dedication to Latin styles, by serving up a killer batch of Afro-Cuban tracks with an incredibly authentic feel. The great Johnny Richards handled the arrangements, and the tracks are long and drawn out, with plenty of solo space ... LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful album from the great Gary McFarland – and completely sublime all the way through! The record's part jazz, part easy, and all McFarland, with a cool compressed breezy vibe that's just about impossible to describe accurately. Gary's vibes are wonderfully set in a small combo with ... LP, Vinyl record album
