If you need to own one album by Average White Band, this is it! The album features the band at their funky best – playing hard and chopping away with a strong crossover sound that put them firmly on the map during the early 70s. Loads of tight rolling basslines and hard drums – all produced with that polished funky sound that was the band's stock-in-trade during the big chart years! The record includes their funky classic "School Boy Crush", still a sampling favorite – plus loads of other nice moments, like "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "High Flyin Woman", and the hit title cut "Cut The Cake". (Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has a peeled mark from sticker removal and some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Wicked Pickett
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
A breakout record that forever put Wilson Pickett at the top of the heap for mainstream 60s soul – thanks to the oft-covered, endlessly played "Mustang Sally" single that leads off the set! And I Love Him (pink cover)
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good
The classic Atlantic LP that turned Esther from a rough-hewn, junkie, juvenile R&B singer into a sensitive interpreter of ballads, standards, and pop tracks. Her version of the Beatles title track is amazing, and she sings it with a fragility and sensitivity that Lennon and McCartney could ... LP, Vinyl record album

See-Saw
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- (reissue)
See-Saw and socking soul from a young Don Covay – working here with his killer early combo The Goodtimers – as one of the most self-contained acts on Atlantic Records in the 60s! The album's overflowing with classic numbers from Covay – soul tunes, but punched up heavily from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Over The Rainbow
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good-
Very early work by Patti LaBelle – working here with the young Bluebelles group, but in a setting that still points the way towards the Labelle sound of the 70s – given that the quartet also features vocals from Cindy Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx! The style is a great mix of ... LP, Vinyl record album

King, 1970. Very Good
Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ain't It Funky
King, 1970. Very Good-
A killer from James Brown – and one of his best instrumental albums of the King years! The record has James working with the pre-JBs James Brown Band – a tight assemblage of players who really know how to craft an off-kilter groove. The guitar's popping on the beat here as much as the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pure genius from Curtis Mayfield – and a record that's got all the righteousness and political power you might guess from the cover!
