A great little album of southern funk from the 70s – cut by the team that provided musical backing on many of the classic Hi Records sessions from the time! The groove is a bit different than usual for Hi – not compressed, burning deep soul – but tight, funky, and flanged-out – a bit like what classic P-Funk might have been like, had it been recorded in Memphis! The group's super sharp in their playing – with great bass and electric keyboards – but they've also got kind of a trippy feel that's very surprising, given the more restrained soul quality of much of the stuff on Hi. The album's all original material, and most cuts have cool vocals slinking in and out of the funk – and titles include "On The Loose", "Skinny Dippin'", "Superstar", "Purple Raindrops", and "You Got Me Comin".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

An R&B trio from that time when more street-based aesthetics were coming into the mainstream of soul – bits of hip hop that were used to bring a really fresh groove to music like this! The touches are slight, but help add in a nice sort of kick to the groove – even in the mellower ... CD

One of the more guitar-driven groups on the West End label at the end of the 70s – an outfit with a really great approach to cutting longer dancefloor grooves! Tracks on the album have a nice tight feel that's echoed strongly by the guitar and keyboard work on the tracks – not as ... CD

A really compelling talent from early 70s Brunswick Records – by an artist who's got the same sort of genre-crossing vibe as Rodriguez, Jose Feliciano, or the team of Alzo & Udine! Herman hails from Colombia, but was a high school student in Miami at the time of this album – yet he ... CD

Hey, don't hold Wayne Cochran's hair against him – because he's one massively soulful dude, despite a high white pompadour – and really knew how to rock the clubs back in the 60s! Cochran's a really unique figure – working with a look that was whiter-than-white, but coming across ... CD

A different sound than the Manhattans of the 70s – but a set that's still got some wonderful harmonies throughout! The production has a modern sort of 80s crackle – more beats and keyboards than before, but also some standout acapella moments that hearken back to an old school style of ... CD
