Beautiful work from a combo who definitely earn their name – some of the freshest modern jazz from the Italian scene of the 60s – served up in warm blend of trumpet, saxes, piano, and vibes! The music here is really amazing – partly modern hardbop, of the sort you might find on Blue Note in the late 50s – but also partly more complicated, with sound elements and phrasings that remind us of some of the most inventive jazz soundtrack work of the generation. The Modern Jazz Gang features key Italian players who include Enzo Scoppa on tenor sax, Cicci Santucci on trumpet, and Sandro Brugnolini on alto sax – plus Puccio Sboto on vibes, Leo Cancellieri on piano, and Alberto Collatina on trombone – all wonderful players who really make for some compelling music throughout!
