A really sweet set of jazzy vocals from Carmen Lundy – one of our favorite singers of recent years! This set finds Carmen stepping back a bit to her roots as a soulful interpreter of standards on a number of tunes, all of which blend with Carmen's traditionally-minded originals quite effortlessly! As always, there's a wonderfully soulful feel throughout – warmly flowing jazz, with a sensibility that stretches back to some of our favorite independent work of the 70s, and which clearly puts Carme in a league with Dee Dee Bridgewater as one of the hippest jazz vocalists ever! Carmen's originals include "In Love Again", "Something To Believe In", "A Gift Of Love", "Wild Child" and more. She also takes a handle on Gershwin's "I Love You Porgy", Michel Legrand's "Windmills Of Your Mind", Rodgers & Hammerstein's "It Might As Well Be Spring", James Moody's "Moody's Mood For Love" and more. Carmen's unfussy arrangements, and breezy delivery is solidly accompanied by Curtis Lundy's bass, Victor Lewis's drums, but some loose accompaniment on violin, Fender Rhodes, sax, piano and percussion. Nice! (Punch through barcode.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

A pivotal set from Cassanda Wilson – and a record that firmly established her as one of the freshest new singers in jazz at the time! The album's awash in rootsy, dusky tones – and has an earthiness that's clearly inspired by older blues, but expressed by Cassandra in voicings that are ... CD
