Fatback flying like the Phoenix – but hardly rising from the ashes, given that the group's always on top! The sound here is a bit different – slightly leaner than before, but in a good way – with lots of core keyboards from Bill Curtis, who also handles most of the lead vocals – although as with most Fatback sets, there's plenty of sharing on that front with the rest of the group members – a bit of harmony here, a switched lead there – all keeping things nice and fresh! And this time around, there almost seems to be more of a focus on the mellower cuts, which we like a lot – because we've always enjoyed the more laidback numbers tucked in amidst the group's funkier sets – so this album's a real treat, with plenty of mellow and midtempo groovers. Titles include "The Drum Song", "Lover Man", "Call Out My Name", "You've Got That Magic", "Big Brother", "Jump Up Baby Jump Up", and "I Love You So".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Spring, 1979. Very Good
It's the group's 12th album, but they're still going strong – working in a sweet mix of bassy funk that really expands their original sound! The album's got a nice clubby feel overall – not really disco, but bumpin soul that still shows the group as a mostly funk act, but one with an ... LP, Vinyl record album
Three Miles High
Cotillion, 1978. Near Mint-
Uptempo ensemble funk from Mass Production, very much in a post-EWF vein. The group does a good job of layering guitars, keys, horns and percussion together in a tight, bass heavy mode, we'd say our only wish is that they were a touch stronger in the vocal performances, which though nice enough, ... Brother Luck
Cotillion, 1981. Very Good
Strong dancefloor funk from ADC Band – one of the tightest combos of their generation, and a group who manage to skirt the worlds between 80s club and more jamming funk. There's a much smoother sound here than the group had in their roots, and the focus here is on plenty of bass and ... LP, Vinyl record album
All American Girls
Cotillion, 1981. Near Mint-
A nice little set for Sister Sledge – their first post Nile Rodgers album of the 80s – with production this time out by Narada Michael Walden – with a crisp, uptempo vibe the does a great job of balancing the righteous post disco club groove with the sing-a-long chorus vocals and ... It's About Time
Cotillion, 1976. Sealed
The Impressions first album for Cotillion, cut after a great 70s run on Curtom – but one that's done with a sound that still carries on the groove nicely! The more righteous tones of the earlier work are shaken loose a bit, to be replaced by a fuller approach to the music built from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Secret Omen
Chocolate City, 1979. Near Mint-
Great work from Cameo's best period – moving into a smooth groove that shows that they've still got their hooks in the funk (as you'll hear on cuts like "The Rock" and "Energy"), but also showing a great talent for more sophisticated modern soul numbers, like the stellar ... LP, Vinyl record album
Swing Your Daddy
Roxbury, 1975. Very Good
A classic around these parts – mostly for the jazzy swing-beat of the title cut, which is a favorite among Chicago steppers. "Swing Your Daddy" is laid out in a long two part version – but there's also a lot of other nice cuts on the album, with a sound that's more in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
This Is My Country
Curtom, 1968. Very Good+
The Impressions are wearing their politics much more on their sleeve at this point – what with a cover that shows them standing in the rubble of the ghetto, and a title that is both a bold proclamation of ownership, and a sad comment on the state of affairs. Curtis Mayfield's pen is in ... LP, Vinyl record album
There's A Riot Goin' On
Epic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful album from Sly and crew – moving way past the straight funk approach of earlier records, into a complicated crossover soul style that's filled with warmth and righteousness. Despite the political tone implied by the "riot" in the title and the co-option of the American ... LP, Vinyl record album
