Cheaters Never Win – The Quinvy Sessions From Muscle Shoals

CD (Item 464885) Soulscape (UK), Late 60s — Condition: New Copy

An unsung chapter in southern soul – the amazing vocalist Tony Borders, heard here on a host of rare Muscle Shoals recordings produced by Quin Ivy! Although obscure, the tunes here are amazing – small-label singles mostly issued at the end of the 60s and the start of the 70s – all tracks that take the torch from Stax and Atlantic, and run way way farther down the line with it. Borders has a crackling quality in his voice that's instantly appealing – but he also handles himself with clear professional poise – a near-perfect approach that's beautifully balanced, and equally great for mellow ballads and more upbeat, slightly funky tunes as well! The CD mostly features tracks recorded between 1967 and 1970 – but also includes a few surprisingly great ones from the late 80s too – tunes done in a really classic Muscle Shoals mode, without any of the too-contemporary cliches that hurt later southern soul singers. The notes feature some great insights to the scene at the time – and titles include "You Better Believe It", "Polly Wally", "Lonely Weekend", "Don't Let Go", "High On The Hog", "Cornbread Woman", "Love & A Friend", "Cheaters Never Win", "I Met Her In Church", "Please Don't Break My Heart", and "Mix & Mingle".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
