CD (Item 371367) Universal (France), 1933/1934/1938/1939 — Condition: New Copy

A great look at the jazz scene in pre-War Paris – one that features 7 obscure Louis Armstrong recordings from 1934, plus a host of various other 30s recordings done in a similar trad jazz mode! The Armstrong sides are quite unique in his catalog – done for the Brunswick label, and featuring a largeish group of mostly French players that include "Super Tiger Rag", "St Louis Blues", "Will You Won't You Be My Baby", "Song Of The Vipers", and a two-part version of "On The Sunny Side Of The Street". After that are 2 tracks – "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Foxy & Grapesy" – by Freddy Johnson, Arthur Briggs, & Their All-Star Orchestra. Marlene Dietrich sings a version of "Wo Is Der Mann" with Johnson, recorded in 1933 – followed by 4 tracks by singer Louis Cole and another Briggs/Johnson group, on titles that include "Grabbin Blues", "Japanese Sandman", and "I Got Rhythm". Next up are 2 tracks by singer Greta Keller – "Goodbye To Summer" and "I'm Gonna Lock My Heart & Throw Away The Key" – and 4 more by clarinetist Danny Polo & His Swing Stars, including "Doing The Gorgonzola", "Montparnasse Jump", and "Polo-Naise".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
