A trio of soundtracks from Piero Piccioni – all done for films directed by Francesco Rosi! First up is a great batch of tracks from Le Mani Sulla Citta – an early 60s film handled by Piccioni in a mix of jazz and some of the groovier touches he'd bring to his late 60s scores – really changing things up nicely between some piano-led groovers, organ numbers, and a few other tunes that use this really great echoey electric bass – quite sinister, but really propulsive too! There's 17 tracks from the film on the CD – way more than the original 45 rpm release. Salvatore Giuliano is represented by a 14 minute suite of tracks – very dark music that builds slowly from a brooding bassline, with lots of deep tones! Il Caso Mattei is featured on another long track – one that runs for almost 20 minutes, and which has some cool electronic effects in the mix – creating an almost pulse-like feel at points! Definite demonic sounds from Piero Piccioni – one of the darkest soundtracks we've ever heard from the legendary Italian film composer – and a real standout from the rest of his work of the 60s! There's some very oddly-tuned instrumentation on the set – weird organ that's not ... CD

I Magliari

An excellent jazz soundtrack from Piero Piccioni – captured at a great early point in his film career, when he was still mixing in lots of elements from his work in jazz as well! The style here echoes some of the French jazz soundtracks of the new wave – and the tunes often sport ... CD

Saimel (Spain), 1968. New Copy
A really groovy little soundtrack – filled with sweet mod musical elements, including a fair bit of great organ and guitar! The organ is especially nice – used in that stretched-out, almost spooky way you'd hear on some of Piero Piccioni's best soundtracks of the time – still ... CD

Pizza Connection
GDM (Italy), 1985. New Copy
A great mid 80s mafia soundtrack by Carlo Savina! The film's setting is New York City, and sure enough, there are some sly little nods to The Godfather in the orchestrations by Savina, but it's ultimately got a masterfully composed vibe that's plenty original! It's got a nice, classical string-la ... CD

A romantic later soundtrack by Ennio Morricone for Mio Caro Dr Grasler, aka The Bachelor – in a timeless piano and strings mode! The setting of the film is pre-World War I Austria, and it has a strong dramatic cast, so the elegance is quite befitting – but it's never stodgy or anything ... CD
