A great session from John Klemmer – a real giant on the tenor, with a sound that long deserves to be revived! Klemmer's blowing here on straight tenor and with some electronic effects on the horn – and he's working with a hip Chicago soul jazz combo that includes Phil Upchurch on bass, Morris Jennings on drums, Pete Cosey on guitar, and Richard Thompson on piano and organ. The cuts are all pretty straight for Klemmer – and have that wonderful mix of styles that you'd find in the Cadet studios of the late 60s, with bits of rock, soul, and funk working their way into the mix. Titles include "Excursion #2", "My Heart Sings", "Third Stone From The Sun", "Free Soul", and "Children Of The Earth Flames". (Orange label pressing. Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Very Good-
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Forget everything you know about Woody Herman – and enjoy this amazing record! The album compiles sides that Woody recorded at the end of the 60s, when he was working with the Chess/Cadet team on some fantastic funky big band material. Most of the tracks feature arrangements by Richard ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fried Buzzard
Cadet, 1965. Very Good+
A live set recorded in 1965 – and more straight ahead soul jazz than Lou's later funk work on Blue Note, even though Leo Morris/Idris Muhammad is on drums. The album is a nice transitional session, though, with a good lounge jazz feel, and some nice long cuts like "Fried Buzzard", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1968. Near Mint-
Sounds cheesy – but this is a pretty wonderful album, the kind that really gets at the dark genius of Jamal! Ahmad's trio with Frank Gant and Jamil Sulieman is joined by the Howard A Roberts Chorale, set to arrangements by Jamal and Joe Kennedy that create these dreamy pillows of sound, ... Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
Excellent stuff – a record that we love it to death, and listen to all the time! Woody Herman's band meets the soulful arrangements of Richard Evans, and the whole thing cooks nicely in the Chess studios in Chicago. The result is a tasty blend of soulful big band tracks, with a strident ... LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Baby Batter
Janus, Late 60s. Very Good+
A classic bit of funky guitar by Harvey Mandel – similar to some of Dennis Coffey's early work in that it's got full on guitar power, very much inspired by heavy rock, filtered through an approach that's also got plenty of funk in it! The killer track here is the classic "Baby ... LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic album, and one of Jimmy's hardest to find! The set is quite different than most of Jimmy's other work – and it features short, hard, funky tracks that feel more like obscure 7" singles than any of Jimmy's straighter soul jazz work. It almost sounds like The JBs are backing ... LP, Vinyl record album
